Downdar Agent

If you've spotted a request from https://downdar.com/agent in your server logs, you're looking at traffic from Downdar's monitoring agent, not a malicious bot.

What is this?

Downdar is a real-time uptime monitoring service. When a customer sets up a monitor for their website, server, or endpoint, our infrastructure sends periodic requests to check that it's online and responding correctly. Those requests identify themselves with this user agent string so site owners can recognize where the traffic is coming from.

What does it do?

The Downdar agent performs simple, lightweight health checks:

• Sends an HTTP request to the monitored URL at the interval configured by our customer.
• Records the response status, response time, and whether the endpoint is reachable.
• Reports results back to the customer's Downdar dashboard and alerts them if something goes wrong.

That's it. The agent doesn't crawl your site, follow links, submit forms, scrape content, or attempt to access anything beyond the specific URL a customer has asked us to monitor.

Is it safe?

Yes. A few things worth knowing:

• Low volume. Checks run at the frequency set by the customer's plan, typically every few minutes at most. This is not high-volume or burst traffic.
• No malicious intent. The agent never attempts to exploit, inject, or probe for vulnerabilities. It sends standard, well-formed requests only.
• Someone chose to monitor this URL. Traffic only appears because a Downdar customer configured a monitor pointing at your endpoint, either because they own it or have permission to monitor it.

Blocking the agent

If you'd prefer not to receive requests from Downdar, you can block traffic using this user agent string in your firewall, WAF, or robots configuration. If you believe a monitor has been set up against your infrastructure without authorization, contact us at hello AT downdar DOT com and we'll look into it.
